CMS 6th grade STEM and Envirothon Students Visit Lordstown GM

Champion Middle School sixth grade STEM and Envirothon students recently visited the Lordstown GM facilities solar array field with Mr. Cornelius, Mr. Murduck, and Mrs. Martini. In preparation for their trip, students used an engineering design challenge from NASA. Students were challenged to develop a method to quickly pump water from a container using solar cells and one beam of light. To extend their learning, students learned that the Lordstown GM solar array is the largest field GM has in the western hemisphere containing over 8,500 solar panels on a 6.5 acre site. Engineers from the facility discussed job opportunities in engineering and environmental science. They also explained how the solar panels can create over two and one half million kilowatt hours and generate enough power to support 182 U.S. homes for a year or power 375,000 Chevy Volt cars. Special thanks to Tom Mock and GM for supporting our students.
