Veterans Day Program: Heroes among Us

On Nov. 11, over 100 veterans were honored at the Champion Community Veterans Day Tribute in this annual event that has become a staple of honor for the community. The program’s honored veteran Bill Bryant headed the procession of service personnel. Trustee Keith Bowser presented a Proclamation of Honor recognizing Bill Bryant and his fellow veterans. Led by Mistress of Ceremonies, Gloria Karafa, members of the Champion Schools Senior Citizens' Advisory Council not only planned and coordinated the event but also acted as hosts/hostesses on the day. Central principal Alexandra Nannicola, her faculty, staff and  students dedicatedly work to make this event an annual success.

The auditorium was filled to capacity with students and community members eager to honor those who have and continue to serve our country. TCTC ROTC served as the event Color Guard. Keynote speaker, James Bragger, offered poignant reflection on why we celebrate Veterans Day. Reverend Barney of Champion Presbyterian offered poignant Invocation. Musical tributes by Denise Starr and the Champion High School Symphonic Band, directed by Tyler Husosky, moved the crowd. Champion High School student Hannah Foster recited the poem “Old Glory” in moving fashion. The apex of the event came when students from Central Elementary, directed by Josh Cokrlic, rose to their feet, faced the veterans and sang of their thanks and admiration. The veterans were so moved that they led the crowd in a standing ovation for the students.

Families and friends recognized veterans by completing a star with the name and branch of the service man/woman that was honored during the Tribute. The Champion Rotary/CHS Interact Club was happy to support the event by affixing the many stars representing service men and women that decorated the walls. The Veterans Day Tribute also featured a rolling slide show presentation of veterans’ names.

At the conclusion of the event, students created a path for the veterans to process out of the auditorium amidst waving red, white and blue ribbons. The magic that was created by this connection between these young people and these real life heroes was summed up best by one of the veterans: “It was overwhelming!”
